What information should I never write on a check?

To protect yourself from identity theft and fraud, you should be careful about what personal information you include on checks.

Never include these items on a check:

  • Social Security Number (SSN)

This is the most important piece of information to protect

  • Complete driver's license number

Some merchants may ask for a partial number, which is safer

  • Passport information

Never write any passport details on checks

  • Credit card numbers

Never reference your credit cards on checks

  • PIN numbers or passwords

These should never be written down, especially on checks

  • Full account numbers

Your checking account number is already on the check; don't add other accounts

  • Date of birth

This information can be used for identity theft

  • Home address

If not pre-printed on the check, consider using a P.O. box instead

  • Phone number

    Unless absolutely necessary for verification

  • Email address

This can be used for phishing attempts

Best Practices for Memo Lines

When writing in the memo line of a check:

Good Examples

  • "March rent"
  • "Car payment"
  • "Invoice #12345"

Avoid Writing

  • "My SSN is 123-45-6789"
  • "Password is banklogin123"
  • "My DOB is 01/15/1985"

Important Note

If a merchant requires additional identification, provide it separately rather than writing it on the check itself. Remember that checks pass through many hands during processing, and the information you write on them could be exposed to multiple people.
